Heat Pump FAQs

Here are a list of common questions. If you don’t find the answer you are looking for please contact Heat Pumps Auckland.

How does a heat pump work?

Heat pumps move the air from one location (outside your house) and transfer that heat inside at a higher temperature. The temperature and air flow are controlled by a remote or from the unit control panel. Heat pumps use a system of pipes which contain gas that expands in one part of the system as they compress in another exterior part of the unit, making it hot. This hot air then passes over a series of coils as it is pumped to the interior unit, releasing the heat. That gas then returns to the outside unit where it expands over another set of coils, making it cold. The cycle continues as this gas is then re-compressed.

What are the benefits of a heat pump?
Heat pumps are an economical way to heat and cool your home and you can install several units to suit your heating requirements. They are safe to leave running while you are out or sleeping without posing a fire risk. Using automated timers, you can set a heat pump to operate automatically to allow for a comfortable temperate when you return home. Heat pumps provide a warmer and drier home and enhance the air in your living space by acting as a filter system.

What is HVAC?
HVAC stands for Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning and refers to mechanical systems for regulating indoor temperature comfort.

Does a heat pump reduce condensation?
A heat pump will not completely eliminate condensation from your home but you will notice a reduction in condensation as a heat pump will assist in reducing moisture in the air.

How easy are heat pumps to use?
Heat pumps are simple to use and maintain. They are operated with a remote control where the occupant can easily regulate temperature and air flow from the unit. They can be programmed to operate at certain times of the day so you can have a warm home when you return at the end of the day or wake up in the morning.

What maintenance is required?
Heat pumps require very little maintenance and cleaning can easily be done yourself. Depending on how often the heat pump is being used, you should vacuum or wash the filters every 4-8 weeks to clear them of dust and other particles.

What size heat pump do I need?
Every home is different and therefore there are several options when it comes to installing your heating system. It is necessary to choose a heat pump which is adequate for the space you want to heat – consider the size of the room, number of windows or glass doors and the amount of insulation of the external and internal walls. If the unit is too small or too large, it will end up using more energy than is required. It’s a good idea to get assistance from a professional heat pump service provider.

Are heat pumps power hungry?
Heat pumps produce up to 3 times the units of heat for every unit of electrical energy consumed in the process, which means that they are in fact the most efficient form of heating you can put in your home when compared to gas or electrical heating appliances. EECA has a rating system which will tell you which are the most energy efficient models in each range.

What are the different types of heat pumps?
•    Single Split systems consist of a single exterior compressor unit and an indoor unit where the air flows out.
•    Multi Split systems consist of a single outdoor unit which connects to multiple indoor units in different areas of a house.
•    A ducted ventilation system consists of a large indoor unit which is concealed in the ceiling space of your home or under the floor. Warm or cool air is then pumped through insulated outlets through ceiling or floor vents throughout the house.

How noisy are heat pumps?
Most leading brands such as Panasonic heat pumps and Mitsubishi heat pumps feature ‘quiet modes’ for added comfort inside and reduced unit noise outside. They are in fact very quiet and do not interfere with the comfort of your home.

What brands do you install?
We carry all leading heat pump brands.

Will a heat pump reduce allergies?
Heat pumps not only provide you and your family with a warmer home, they also keep your home clean and healthy by filtering air and act as a circulating fan which can help reduce the effects of allergies. Some units include technologies to improve the air quality of the room including anti-allergen, anti-virus and anti-bacterial.

How much do heat pumps cost?
Heat pump prices will vary depending on the brand you choose, how many units you require and the installation cost of your service provider. As a guide, heat pump prices start at around $1,500 for a small area and up to $4,800 for split systems. Cost of installation will also vary depending on your service provider.

Running costs will depend on the amount of heating you require however it is roughly a quarter of the cost of electric heating and a third of the cost of gas heating. Heat pumps are a good investment when considering the savings from reduced power consumption in comparison to electrical heating appliances.

(Almost) Everything you need to know about heat pump quotes

If you’re thinking about buying a heat pump, the odds are pretty good that you’ve already started to look into the options out there.
And boy are there a lot of options!
With seemingly hundreds and hundreds of different kinds of heat pumps available at almost every price point imaginable, it’s easy to see why so many people have a tough time finding the right one. Combine that with that fact that most heat pump quotes come over the internet in an email or on the phone, and you’re looking at a pretty tough situation here.
Thankfully, with the tips and tricks we’ve included for you below, you shouldn’t have too much to worry about going forward. We’re going to breakdown everything you need to look for in a new heat pump, as well as show you exactly why you’ll need to get your heat pump quotes from professionals that have visited your home and understand your situation completely.
Let’s jump right in!

Finding the right heat pump for your home

Before we get into the nitty gritty about verifying your heat pump quotes, it’s important that we make sure you’re looking into the right HVAC and heat pump solutions in the first place.
There are a lot of different factors that are going to come into play when you’re shopping for a new heat pump, some of them obvious and others not so much. You’ll need to be smart and savvy about the choices you make when shopping for a heat pump, not only because of the total cost of the equipment and the installation, but also because of the important role this tech is going to play in your home.
After all, without the right heat pump, you’re going to be spending a lot of cold nights in a cold home!
Heat pumps have specific ranges of outdoor and indoor temperatures where they really work well, and you’ll want to make sure that the climate your home is in right now is going to work nicely with the heat pump technology. Some people are under the impression that they are going to provide all the heat you need to stay nice and toasty in the frigid winter months, but sometimes that’s just not going to be the case.
This is just one of the big reasons why you’ll want to get your heat pump quotes from professionals that have visited your home. They’ll know whether or not a heat pump is right for you right away!
Secondly, you’ll want to be sure that your heat pump is as energy efficient as possible. After all, you don’t want to be throwing money right out the window because your system isn’t taking advantage of the latest and greatest advances and breakthroughs, right? Don’t waste money on energy, but instead look for Energy Star rated technology – you’ll be glad you did!

Getting legitimate heat pump quotes

The first thing that you’re going to want to do when looking for the right heat pump quotes is to use our free service to find local heat pump installers in your area that handle these kinds of installations.
Our free heat pump locator tool is going to be your best friend in this regard, and a quick search should return more than enough information to give you everything you need to know. Find a handful of companies worth checking out a bit more closely, and then start focusing on them and only them. Friends and family can also be tapped as an “inside infoHeat Pump Quotesrmation” resource to help point you in the right direction, too.
The big question that you’ll want to ask all of these HVAC companies has everything to do with how they handle the heat pump quotes process. You’re looking for professional operations that are going to come out to your home, investigate the house thoroughly to understand your specific needs and the demands that will be placed on a heat pump, and THEN give you heat pump quotes – staying as far away from “over the phone” operations.
Anyone that gives you heat pump quotes without actually getting an idea of the “lay of the land”, so to speak, is an operation that cannot be fully trusted. There’s just no such thing as a one-size-fits-all solution when you’re talking about heating and cooling technology. Always ask for in-person heat pump quotes, and you’ll get concrete and accurate numbers that you’re going to be able to trust – numbers that aren’t going to change halfway through the project!

How to Choose a Heat Pump

How to Choose a Heat Pump

As the weather gets a little bit colder, it’s important that you make sure your home is outfitted with the right heat pump to keep you (and your loved ones) nice and toasty.

Unfortunately, finding the right heat pump can be a bit of an uphill battle. There are a lot of different options to pick and choose from, and every manufacturer is going to promise the moon and the stars when it comes to the results that they guarantee they produce.

To better help you sift through all of the different options, with together this quick list of things you want to look into when figuring out how to choose a heat pump.

Let’s dive right in!

Calculate your heating needs

It’s going to be impossible for you to purchase a quality heat pump without first understanding exactly how much room you have to heat in the first place, and how you’re going to go about doing exactly that.

You’ll want to understand exactly how much square footage you are going to need your new heat pump to handle. You get this figure by adding up all of the square footage of the rooms that are actually going to need to be heated, and not just the total space of your home. This is especially true if you have attic spaces or basement spaces that aren’t going to need to be heated actively.

Efficiency is absolutely everything

Though there are going to be all kinds of buzzwords and marketing phrases thrown at you when you are shopping around for a new heating pump, the designation that you’re going to want to pay the most attention to is the one that has to do with energy efficiency.

Look for heat pumps that have ENERGY STAR ratings, as they are likely to be the most efficient of all the different options you can purchase. These efficient models will help to save upwards of $250 a year compared to those that do not have the same focus on efficiency.

You’re also going to want to look at the temperature ratings of the heat pumps themselves. There are some ENERGY STAR rated heat pumps out there that have been designed to work in warmer temperatures, but do not have the same efficiency rating when the mercury drops lower than those baseline levels. This is something to focus on when looking to choose a new heat pump.

Run through this quick checklist

It becomes a lot easier figuring out how to choose a heat pump when you run through this quick checklist.

First of all, you’re going to want to make sure that your insulation is up to par. If you have any gaps in your insulation, now’s the time to fill them in.

Secondly, you’re going to want to look for a quality brand that manufactures the heat pump that you end up purchasing. There are definitely going to be temptations to cut corners and pinch pennies on the heat pump that you purchase, but you’re going to be saving a little bit of money and buying a boatload of headaches if you go in that direction.

Third, it’s important that you make sure that your new heat pump is going to be able to pump out and heat of the kind of capacity that you’re going to ask it to handle. There are two numbers that you’re going to want to focus on:

  • The capacity output – the amount of heat the pump produces and
  • The power input – the amount of energy that the pump consumes when producing that capacity

The higher the ratio between these two figures, the more efficient your setup is going to be. As mentioned above, efficiency is absolutely everything (especially if you don’t want to break the bank running your heat pump on a regular basis).

Closing thoughtsAuckland Heat Pumps

At the end of the day, figuring out how to choose a heat pump doesn’t have to be anywhere near as difficult or as confusing as some people make it out to be. Use the tips and tricks included above and you’ll be off to the races and nice and toasty all winter long without any trouble at all.

Hopefully we’ve been able to help!
